What I
Did on My Summer Vacation:
My Class at Penland
by Craig Nutt
August 24-29,
1998
This summer I taught a one week course on
wood carving at Penland School of
Crafts in North Carolina. I laid out an ambitious program for a mere week.
The first day we learned to sharpen tools and make basic cuts. The second day,
the students designed and began carving a relief panel of leafage. The third day
we made carving tools from files, and each students started on a table leg for a
collaborative piece. The only restriction on the design was that the subject
matter of the leg begin with the Letter C.

I expected the table to be an exercise -
that we would cobble together our partially finished legs at the end of the
class, and be pleased that we had accomplished so much. My students were
INCREDIBLE! Working late into the night, and some up all night the last evening,
they actually finished their legs, painted them and glued them on. We finished
the table on Saturday at 10:58 AM, with two full minutes to spare until the
final session exhibition.
